ome changes in the integumentary system
occur with age, and some are caused by pro-
longed exposure to the sun. Let’s take a clos-
er look at these changes.
Aging Changes the Appearance
and Quality of Skin and
Its Associated Structures
Most age-related changes in skin do not occur until people
reach their late 40s. Figure 4.10 summarizes the changes
that occur at various stages.
Skin Cancers Can Develop from
Repeated Exposure to UV Radiation
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the
sun or tanning beds can cause damage to the skin and may
lead to development of skin cancer. Long-wave ultraviolet
light (UVA) and short-wave ultraviolet light (UVB) both
contribute to the development of skin cancer.
There are three main types of skin cancer:
Basal cell carcinoma (78%
of all skin cancers)—Tumors
arise from cells in the stratum
basale of the epidermis and
rarely metastasize.
Squamous cell carcinoma (20% of all skin cancers)—
Tumors
arise
from
stratum
spinosum
cells
in
the
epidermis and vary in their tendency to metastasize.
These tumors tend to arise from preexisting lesions of
sun-damaged skin.
